Title : All-Mountain Skier : The Way to Expert Skiing Author : R. Mark Elling Rating : 5 Stars out of 5. Summary : Written for the intermediate skier
Elling wrote this for an intermediate to advanced skier looking to take their skiing to a higher level. Although it does have a good, large section on basic ski skills, it doesn't pretend to coddle a novice through pizza and french fries.
If the next day is a powder day, I'll review the sections on powder and crud. If it hasn't snowed in a while, I'll read the sections on carving and bumps. You can jump around and get exactly what you need out of it, and it's written very well for that purpose.
I highly recommend this book.
Title : Hermann Maier: The Race of My Life Author : Hermann Maier Rating : 2 Stars out of 5. Summary : Technocratic
As a friend of Bill Johnson and a longtime racer and race fan, I looked forward to the book, but after 100 pages it was clear the technocratic writing style would not bring Maier's compelling recovery to much life. On the facts alone one feels deeply for Maier personally and respects his incredible rehab, but oft cited medical reports, training charts and plans, and media strategy do little to tell us how Maier personally coped with his losses and regained his form. Clearly Maier has great courage, on and off snow, but the book reduces him largely to a re-engineered man and athlete, rather than someone facing human and career death who by family, will, passion, faith and science recovers. That story is there, but barely. To be fair, the book seemed to be a function of Maier's stoicism, which is clear throughout the book. I think there is more to Maier than he was willing to tell.
Title : Harald Harb's Essentials of Skiing (Includes Free DVD) Author : Harald Harb Rating : 5 Stars out of 5. Summary : Essential reading for ski improvement!
This book is a masterpiece of ski instruction and deserves to be appreciated on many levels.
At the simplest level, the book has drills, which, when practiced, will bring effective movements into your skiing. These movements give much greater control, with less effort.
For a more focused skier, cues are provided for self-coaching, to be sure you are performing the drills accurately. Review of video of your skiing, in slow motion, will disclose any movements, like stemming, steering, and skidding, that are clues that execution of the movements could be improved.
If you already ski well, but want to bump your performance up a few notches, then Harb's conceptual and technical explanations and diagrams can trigger an understanding of how even subtle movements can have a big impact. Each of the essentials has a significant interaction with the other essentials. Greater finesse in performing one essential will enhance the effectiveness of other movements. In its explanations of these reinforcing actions, the book demonstrates its greatest level of insight.
All of the above observations are based on serial readings of the book, dryland and on-snow practice of the drills, video analysis, and PMTS coaching. When the movements are done correctly, the skis just behave better!
Throughout the book, the writing is clear and the pictures and diagrams clarify the text. The included DVD complements the stop-action photos.
If you are serious about improving your skiing, look no further for a book to aid your development. Some suggestions about how to get the most benefit:
1. read it through cover to cover to get a good understanding of the concepts
2. practice the drills and pay careful attention to the cues that indicate whether you are performing the tasks correctly
3. spend time repeating the drills until you can easily do them accurately
4. verify your performance by analysis of your tracks, video, or a knowledgeable observer or coach, preferably Harb trained
5. alternate between drills and free skiing, but pay attention while free skiing to be sure you incorporate the movement patterns from the drills
6. consider participating in the PMTS on-line forum [...]
While still technically consistent with the Anyone Can be An Expert Skier volumes I and II, the style of presentation is very different and the explanations and diagrams approach the concepts from a different angle than the earlier books.. Those who have studied volumes I and II in detail will still find new material, like dryland and on-the-snow drills. In short, Essentials is completely complementary to Harb's earlier works.

Title : Allen Mike's Really Cool Telemark Tips Author : Allen O'Bannon Rating : 5 Stars out of 5. Summary : Excellent!
I've been telemarking badly for a few years, got hold of this book, and all my faults are in there! This is a wonderfully put together collection of tips, structured in a way that makes a beginners' progression through the various parts of a telemark turn simple.
The cartoon illustations convey the positioning with humour and accuracy, making clear the text, not that the text isn't clear, far from it.
The flowchart at the end is really worthwhile. Can't recommend this enough to a beginner or intermediate telemark turner!
Title : The Athletic Skier Author : Warren Witherell Rating : 3 Stars out of 5. Summary : Careful
As a PSIA Ski Instructor I would recommend folks be very careful about some of the canting information in this book. The book assumes that all bowlegged skiers are overcanted and while this is mostly true it is not absolutely true. Many bowlegged skiers (including myself) are naturally undercanted and the advice presented in this book is incorrect for us. This book seems to be the source for the 'if you are bowlegged, cant on the outside of the ski' common wisdom, and again that is simply not true in all cases. Canting solutions are individual and must not be over generalized. Instead, read the descriptions of what effects over or under canting can have and see which fits you. Then cant as necessary.
Also, I would say that this 'used to be' the definitive guide. After reading both this and All Mountain Skier by Mark Elling, I would definately recommend the latter. Ellings book is much more useful for actual practice. There is not much in here that is not better covered in Ellings book. Also, the technical information in Ellings book (on canting for example) is much more accurate.
Title : Snowboarding: A Woman's Guide (Ragged Mountain Press Woman's Guide) Author : Julia Carlson Rating : 5 Stars out of 5. Summary : Not Only for Women
As the author of a site dedicated to "grays on trays" (older folks learning how to ride), I was eager to read some books on snowboarding. Most books on the subject (like most magazines and web sites) are written with the juvenile reader in mind. This book is not one of them, and the "gray" reader can be grateful for that.
The brief testimonials or stories of women in their 20s, 30s, and 40s helps point out that the sport is not limited to teens and pre-teens.
Sure, there are some "girl power" throwaway lines along the way ("With a file guide, sharpening your edges is about as difficult as shaving your legs"). For the most part, however, the women-specific information is useful for men as well, if only for providing a contrast. For example, Carlson explains how women's feet differ from men, and how that effects the choice of boots. (Not only do women tend to have smaller feet, but the proportions of different parts of the feet differ.)
The book offers plenty of reasons why learning how to ride is worth the effort. It does a good job of explaining the different types of riding (freestyle, freeriding, alpine) and how that should influence the kind of equipment you buy. The index is useful, but there should have been a glossary as well.
I have read this book twice, and Kevin Ryan's "The Illustrated Guide to Snowboarding" only once, but here's my take on comparing the two. Carlson is self-consciously appealing to women, and in general, to adults. Ryan does not, but then, it's not exactly a juvenile book, either. Carlson's book is more about freeriding, carving, and cruising; Ryan spends a fair amount of time talking about freestyle. Ryan also takes much more time with preliminaries, too. If you have a thing for zen, he's your man.
If you're starting out, read Carlson first. Then you may want to read Ryan, but you may not need to.
Title : Trail Atlas of Michigan: Mountain Biking, Hiking, Cross-Country Skiing, and Nature Trails. Author : Dennis Hansen Rating : 5 Stars out of 5. Summary : I wish there was a book like this for every state!
This is an excellent book for anyone who lives in Michigan. We've used it for hiking and cross country skiing, and it provides excellent accurate information.
Title : Dawson's Guide to Colorado's Fourteeners, Vol. 1: The Northern Peaks Author : Rating : 5 Stars out of 5. Summary : a great guide for year round climbing
Lou Dawson is incredible, not only does he describe summer routes in this guide but makes one want to get out of their "warm" recliner and conquer some winter and spring routes as well. a must have book for Colorado's 14'ers. While you at it, get Vol 2 as well!
Title : Anyone Can Be an Expert Skier 1: The New Way to Ski (Includes Bonus DVD) Author : Harald Harb Rating : 5 Stars out of 5. Summary : Awesome ski instruction system
I have experienced first hand instruction with this system. I have also taken the PSIA lessons offered at many ski areas. If you don't want to be stuck in the wedge forever then have a look at this. Harald Harb's PMTS is a systematic approach that will get you skiing better than 90% of the people you see skiing on any given day. Don't beleive the hype about out of the mainstream. They have something here. Believe it, this system works. If you want to carve and rip this is it!
