Summary : Great Learn-How-to-Board Book!

Great introduction to snowboarding. Provides all the language and techniques, from beginner to expert. It works best to reread it again after a few times out as you will pick up on many of the tips and techniques once you learn how the basic moves feel. I kept my copy in the car and reread some sections over lunch on my first day. Especially important to read the section on getting off of the chair lift. This has saved me from many falls, while I have watched others flounder and get injured for not following the advice. Still need to take a lesson first time out, but it will all make sense alot sooner.

Summary : Awesome story my son loves it!

We love all of her books and buy them 1 at a time as we can afford them. In an age of big in your face pop up books and childrens books that make your eyes hurt these books are a wonderful find. As always the illustrations are beautiful - I read all the reviews first but few had actual specifics about the actual invdividual stories of her books, so that's what I've done here. I hope it helps others know what wonderful books they are. I wish they were easier to find in Canada.

This story is about Ollie - his father gets him a pair of skis for his 6th birthday. He waited longingly for winter to come. He was so excited when it did that he wanted to go use his skis. His mum made sure he ate his porridge and was dressed warmly before he headed out. He came across Jack Frost who takes him to King Winters castle. They come across Mrs. Thaw who is trying to melt the snow but Jack Frost chases her off and breathes on everything to make it all frozen again. They go off to king winters castle which is beautiful and built of polished ice. He meets king winter and gets to see people sitting around the fire working away happily making ski boots and women knitting thick socks. In another room he sees girls knitting ski mitts and embroidering and in a big workshop some boys were building skis and tobggans and sledges and skate blades. They were trying to finish them all for everyone before Christmas. When they all took a break, Ollie gets to go outside and ski, skate and built snowmen and big snowcastles and have a huge snowball fight. When the break was over the children went back inside and Jack Frost offered to take Ollie home, so they harnessed a reindeer and had him pull them on Ollie's skis. Jack Frost said goodbye at the edge of the forest. Come Christmas morning Ollie was so excited to find a pair of magnificent skates for himself and a toboggan for his little brother. He knew at once Jack Frost had paid him a visit! He used his skates nearly every day that winter and they tried to get Mrs. Thaw to not come in the spring but she came and melted all the snow. Then spring came driving up in her airy carriage, and curtsied to Mrs. Thaw and Ollie decided he really liked Mrs. Thaw after all. Wonderful story!

I have been reading this book for about twenty years(first publication was November 1977); it was the first of two Inner Game books which, although differing in details, both transformed my attitude to and my performance in the sports I love. I was fortunate to have been given it by a patient who was an Inner Game instructor (or rather, facilitator). If Inner Skiing has only now (1997) become widely available, thanks to the Internet, a generation of British skiers has lost out; for years it has been available only in the USA and to members of Inner Game workshops. With examples from life and from Inner Skiing workshops which are encouraging, inspiring, and often emotionally touching, the book helps skiers of all standards to confront their fears and to tap into the mind's and the body's unconscious store of knowledge and skills; the fears of "flying", falling, speed, injury, failure, and the fear of looking stupid; the knowledge locked into Gallwey's Self 2, a Self which, he teaches us, is ours too. Where his Self 1 is trying, tense, unsure, scared and controlling, Self 2 is free, relaxed, effortless, powerful, and instinctive. Gallwey and his co-author Bob Kriegel, a more experienced skier than he and a psychologist, equip their readers with simple but highly effective keys to Self 2, enabling us increasingly to find in skiing the exhilaration of the breakthrough run, and unlocking the confidence without which the sport can be an exercise in anxiety. Most of us in the UK only get to ski once a year. Trying to capture Cross-Country Skiing technique and be comprehensive yet concise, is nearly an impossible task for a written work, multimedia, or video. Einar Svensson has contributed an important work to the sport.

If you are a serious xc skier, then you have to have this book as a reference on your shelf. I do.

I have always been a fan of Hermann Maier - not many have the ability to bounce back like he can. I bought the book for my son who is just learning to ski and he really enjoyed the biography. It is a good against all odds story and I would encourage anyone looking for a gift for an aspiring skier to send them a copy.

We have learned that Hermann has a talent for skiing but the guy can write too. The book also teaches good sportsmanship and I want my son to grow up respecting his team mates and have a good attitude. Being a good sport is not just about big sponsors.

We really enjoyed watching him ski and win medals at the Olympics!! And we really enjoyed his book!

I've been telemarking badly for a few years, got hold of this book, and all my faults are in there! This is a wonderfully put together collection of tips, structured in a way that makes a beginners' progression through the various parts of a telemark turn simple.

The cartoon illustations convey the positioning with humour and accuracy, making clear the text, not that the text isn't clear, far from it.

The flowchart at the end is really worthwhile. Can't recommend this enough to a beginner or intermediate telemark turner!

Summary : Neat pictures, but too much ski jumping.

Neat pictures, but kind of a muddled presentation. This is not really a general history of skiing, but a biography of Alf Engen who was a local hero in Salt Lake City, Utah and ran the Ski School at Alta for years and years. There's too much about ski jumping and not enough about other kinds of skiing. The author, Alf's son Alan, seems like a spokesman for the ski industry more than a historian.
