Elling wrote this for an intermediate to advanced skier looking to take their skiing to a higher level. Although it does have a good, large section on basic ski skills, it doesn't pretend to coddle a novice through pizza and french fries.

If the next day is a powder day, I'll review the sections on powder and crud. If it hasn't snowed in a while, I'll read the sections on carving and bumps. You can jump around and get exactly what you need out of it, and it's written very well for that purpose.

I highly recommend this book.

A lot of work went into writing Ski Skating With Champions. It dissects ski skating like no other book before it. Many intermediate level skiers will find it thought provoking.

The expert and elite skiers many find a variety of technical errors, or that the text is overly complex - lacks a consolidated and simple understanding of skiing, but for the sport racer the book is a good one to have on the shelf. I also recommend "Tao of Skiing" which takes an entirely different approach.

I have been reading this book for about twenty years(first publication was November 1977); it was the first of two Inner Game books which, although differing in details, both transformed my attitude to and my performance in the sports I love. I was fortunate to have been given it by a patient who was an Inner Game instructor (or rather, facilitator). If Inner Skiing has only now (1997) become widely available, thanks to the Internet, a generation of British skiers has lost out; for years it has been available only in the USA and to members of Inner Game workshops. With examples from life and from Inner Skiing workshops which are encouraging, inspiring, and often emotionally touching, the book helps skiers of all standards to confront their fears and to tap into the mind's and the body's unconscious store of knowledge and skills; the fears of "flying", falling, speed, injury, failure, and the fear of looking stupid; the knowledge locked into Gallwey's Self 2, a Self which, he teaches us, is ours too. This DVD (book) is great for any intermediate/advanced skier wanting to improve. I think that this DVD is even better than Lito Tejada Flores's DVDs. It is hard to say, I watched Lito's DVD before this.
This is way cheaper and way better than a one hour on the slopes instruction !!! And you can improve off-season just by watching the DVD |:)).

If you buy only one book on skiing, this should be it. It is a joy to read, and re-read. Keep it on the coffee table at your ski condo and read any random chapter. You'll learn something.

Warren is the father of carving long before it became a fad. It is "how the racers ski" (which is also the name of his first book from the early 70's that is a classic).

The content if outstanding and the writing and presentation is equally as nice. Glossy pages, excellent photography.

I've given this book to more hard core skiers than I'd like to say.

The section on balance and alignment alone are worth the money. Buy it!

If you are a good-to-expert groomed-trail skier who has been frustrated when trying to use those skills in the bumps, there's a reason. Contrary to what so many of us believe, mogul skiing isn't just a harder version of carving turns down groomers. It's a totally different animal, and once Dan DiPiro explains it in his outstanding new book, you'll understand why all that effort in the bumps has so far not produced any results.

The title is apt. Ski instructors at most resorts, unless you are lucky enough to find a true moguls expert, tend to believe that the basic skills they teach to all skiers are equally applicable in the bumps. But they're not. As DiPiro explains, basic techniques like carving and hip angulation will actually prevent you from skiing the bumps efficiently, while other techniques -- such as keeping your skis close together and maintaining a more erect "home posture" -- will suddenly make you feel at home in the bumps as never before.

I've been telemarking badly for a few years, got hold of this book, and all my faults are in there! This is a wonderfully put together collection of tips, structured in a way that makes a beginners' progression through the various parts of a telemark turn simple.

The cartoon illustations convey the positioning with humour and accuracy, making clear the text, not that the text isn't clear, far from it.

The flowchart at the end is really worthwhile. Can't recommend this enough to a beginner or intermediate telemark turner!

I've skied with this book for one season now and found that the tips are relevant and enjoyable. Both the beginner and expert can learn from this book.
Personally, I've eliminated most of my bad skiing habits and not created any new ones, which is really praise. I've found handy tips on how to explain what I do to others while in class. This book has become an "on hill" teaching tool and stays in my day pack just for that purpose.
This compendium of "illustrations" keeps me fresh while teaching, although the book is by no means intended for an instructor. The graphics are relevant, funny, and, relate the sense of joy that both authours must feel about telemarking.
The book's a giggle to re-read, for me, it can stimulate the sense of being on the snow even during an August heat wave.

I've bought three books about skiing recently and this is the best. I'm an aspiring expert skier. This book is really helping me reach my goals. The book has a chapter each on the repertoire of fundamental skills like stance, steering, outside ski dominance, edging, pressure control, etc. The book would great for that alone. But the book in later chapters explains how to use these tools to carve, ski powder, crud, bumps, steeps and trees. I'm reading this book again and again. It's the bible for people wanting to be and expert skier.
