Title : The Essential Guide to Skiing: 201 Things Every Skier Must Know Author : Ron LeMaster Rating : 5 Stars out of 5. Summary : Vital information for new skiers
This book contains a lot of information useful to new skiers. I wish I had it when I started skiing a few years ago. Worth at least the price of a few skiing lessons.
Title : Allen Mike's Really Cool Backcountry Ski Book (Falcon Guides Backcountry Skiing) Author : Allen O'Bannon Rating : 5 Stars out of 5. Summary : A Great Source of Backcountry Wisdom
This book combines some great humor and excellent line drawings with some great wilderness and backcountry wisdom. All the tips and tricks one picks up over the years are in this book and it is highly recommended reading for newcomers and those already involved.
Title : Free-Heel Skiing: Telemark and Parallel Techniques for All Conditions (Mountaineers Outdoor Expert Series) Author : Paul Parker Rating : 5 Stars out of 5. Summary : Truly a bible of free heel skiing
Great book that all free heel skiers should read. Eye opener is that "Telemark" is just a turn - free heel skiing is hell of a lot more. Good reasoning why you should do the tele the way Mr Parker is proposing. This book changed my free heel skiing for good.
Title : Bode: Go Fast, Be Good, Have Fun Author : Bode Miller Rating : 4 Stars out of 5. Summary : Introspective Bode
I've just finished reading Bode's book after reading the Herminator's auto biography and what struck me is the difference each of them views their life, surroundings, and the meaning of it all. Whereas both exude confidence and a common vitriol to the hounding press and media, Bode comes across as introspective, self admittedly shy, compared to the all confident, all conquering Maier.
Both are obviously very special athletes - Maier crushing the race courses and his opponents on the World Cup circuit, but Bode perhaps his own demons in his quest to find meaning in life. It was rather surprising to learn that winning at all costs is not central to Bode's life.
For ski racers, both are a good read. A bit plodding at times to maintain a high level of interest, but a good view of what makes each of them tick and keep at the great white circus.
Title : Anyone Can Be an Expert Skier 2: Powder, Bumps, and Carving (Includes Bonus DVD) Author : Harald Harb Rating : 5 Stars out of 5. Summary : Excellent book for expert skiers
This book is essential if you want to learn the PMTS system which Harald Harb created. I would recommend that you do that. This is a book for experts and assumes you already have learned to ski, but it would be very useful even if you are a new skier. Just realize that it won't teach you how to snowplow or stem-christi. The ski season is over now (April 06) and I got this too late to use it for 05-06. But, I can tell you that this book is very well presented. Without it I would have had a very hard time understanding how to carve my skis using this technique or understanding why I wouldn't want to make some mistakes that would not be obvious. Important details are revealed in the book that I have found nowhere else. The DVD that comes with the book is a powerful presentation that follows the book's format. The DVD shows some excellent examples of how to do exercises and how to actually ski the technique. It contains demonstrations of using the technique in many types of difficult terrain. This includes bumps which I am particularly interested in where carving is an especially difficult task. I was already aware of this system from several other sources. Without this book, I doubt that I would ever have been able to do it correctly. The book and the DVD work very well together.
Title : Ski Skating With Champions: How to Ski With Least Energy Author : Einar Svensson Rating : 5 Stars out of 5. Summary : Great Contribution to XC Skiing
Einar Svensson has put an amazing level of effort and care into producing "Ski Skating With Champions: How to Ski With Least Energy," and it shows.
Trying to capture Cross-Country Skiing technique and be comprehensive yet concise, is nearly an impossible task for a written work, multimedia, or video. Einar Svensson has contributed an important work to the sport.
If you are a serious xc skier, then you have to have this book as a reference on your shelf. I do.
David McMahon, 1993 Canadian National Biathlon Champion
Title : Harald Harb's Essentials of Skiing (Includes Free DVD) Author : Harald Harb Rating : 5 Stars out of 5. Summary : Essential reading for ski improvement!
This book is a masterpiece of ski instruction and deserves to be appreciated on many levels.
At the simplest level, the book has drills, which, when practiced, will bring effective movements into your skiing. These movements give much greater control, with less effort.
For a more focused skier, cues are provided for self-coaching, to be sure you are performing the drills accurately. Review of video of your skiing, in slow motion, will disclose any movements, like stemming, steering, and skidding, that are clues that execution of the movements could be improved.
If you already ski well, but want to bump your performance up a few notches, then Harb's conceptual and technical explanations and diagrams can trigger an understanding of how even subtle movements can have a big impact. Each of the essentials has a significant interaction with the other essentials. Greater finesse in performing one essential will enhance the effectiveness of other movements. In its explanations of these reinforcing actions, the book demonstrates its greatest level of insight.
All of the above observations are based on serial readings of the book, dryland and on-snow practice of the drills, video analysis, and PMTS coaching. When the movements are done correctly, the skis just behave better!
Throughout the book, the writing is clear and the pictures and diagrams clarify the text. The included DVD complements the stop-action photos.
If you are serious about improving your skiing, look no further for a book to aid your development. Some suggestions about how to get the most benefit:
1. read it through cover to cover to get a good understanding of the concepts
2. practice the drills and pay careful attention to the cues that indicate whether you are performing the tasks correctly
3. spend time repeating the drills until you can easily do them accurately
4. verify your performance by analysis of your tracks, video, or a knowledgeable observer or coach, preferably Harb trained
5. alternate between drills and free skiing, but pay attention while free skiing to be sure you incorporate the movement patterns from the drills
6. consider participating in the PMTS on-line forum [...]
While still technically consistent with the Anyone Can be An Expert Skier volumes I and II, the style of presentation is very different and the explanations and diagrams approach the concepts from a different angle than the earlier books.. Those who have studied volumes I and II in detail will still find new material, like dryland and on-the-snow drills. In short, Essentials is completely complementary to Harb's earlier works.
Title : Dawson's Guide to Colorado's Fourteeners, Vol. 1: The Northern Peaks Author : Rating : 5 Stars out of 5. Summary : The peakbagger's best friend
Having climbed Colorado 14ers for more than 30 years, I've used all available guidebooks. First rule, remember that the info in the book is often wrong -- unless you're willing to think for yourself, avoiding mountains is the best bet. After that, to me Dawson is the best guidebook ever. Roach is good too -- it's good to have both. But in spite of the price difference, Dawson's 2 volumes are well worth it. And please, tread lightly!
Title : Allen Mike's Really Cool Telemark Tips Author : Allen O'Bannon Rating : 5 Stars out of 5. Summary : Incomparable -- an easy resource book
This is the classic comic book version of a telemark skiing text book: brief, clear narrative accompanying excellent cartoon drawings. The book shows both old style (knee down) and new style (no deep dips, feet never widely separated front to back) telemark techniques without really distinguishing between the two but, if you follow the exercises and advice, your skiing will improve. An enjoyable read, an attractive style and price.
