This book combines some great humor and excellent line drawings with some great wilderness and backcountry wisdom. All the tips and tricks one picks up over the years are in this book and it is highly recommended reading for newcomers and those already involved.

I have been reading this book for about twenty years(first publication was November 1977); it was the first of two Inner Game books which, although differing in details, both transformed my attitude to and my performance in the sports I love. I was fortunate to have been given it by a patient who was an Inner Game instructor (or rather, facilitator). If Inner Skiing has only now (1997) become widely available, thanks to the Internet, a generation of British skiers has lost out; for years it has been available only in the USA and to members of Inner Game workshops. With examples from life and from Inner Skiing workshops which are encouraging, inspiring, and often emotionally touching, the book helps skiers of all standards to confront their fears and to tap into the mind's and the body's unconscious store of knowledge and skills; the fears of "flying", falling, speed, injury, failure, and the fear of looking stupid; the knowledge locked into Gallwey's Self 2, a Self which, he teaches us, is ours too. Where his Self 1 is trying, tense, unsure, scared and controlling, Self 2 is free, relaxed, effortless, powerful, and instinctive. Gallwey and his co-author Bob Kriegel, a more experienced skier than he and a psychologist, equip their readers with simple but highly effective keys to Self 2, enabling us increasingly to find in skiing the exhilaration of the breakthrough run, and unlocking the confidence without which the sport can be an exercise in anxiety. Most of us in the UK only get to ski once a year. This guide is the best of all the 14'er guides I've seen. The most distinguishing characteristic of the book is the photographs of the mountains with the routes shown on the pictures. No other guide does this and it helps in visualizing what the written descriptions of peaks say. Bar none, this is the best 14'er guide you can buy.

Summary : I learnt from this book

I was a beginner when I bought this book. I followed the instruction to practice. By the end of that ski season, I could already go down diamond slopes.

I think it would be easier for most people to learn skiing from instructors. But if you like learning from books instead (like me), this book is an excellent choice, at least it worked for me. This book teach you a lot of advanced technique, which I find it very useful on bumpy or steep slopes.

I found this book very useful and informative. This book covers everything from boots and skis to vacations and lesssons. This book is almost like an Encyclopedia for anything skiing related. Skiiers of all caliber can greatly benefit from reading this book. Great read!

I am a 24 year old female who has been secretly yearning to try snowboarding. I haven't because I didn't know what stuff to rent or buy, or how not to look stupid. After reading this book, I can't wait to try it. Great explanations of what gear is best for women and why, and detailed explanations of what to do once you are on the snow. Very lighthearted and encouraging tone.

This is a great book if you are looking for a guide to some of the best cross country and telemark trails, however since i was looking for more of a downhill backcountry guide, this is not really what i was looking for, but it is still a very informative and well written book.

This DVD (book) is great for any intermediate/advanced skier wanting to improve. I think that this DVD is even better than Lito Tejada Flores's DVDs. It is hard to say, I watched Lito's DVD before this.
This is way cheaper and way better than a one hour on the slopes instruction !!! And you can improve off-season just by watching the DVD |:)).

Summary : Great Learn-How-to-Board Book!

Great introduction to snowboarding. Provides all the language and techniques, from beginner to expert. It works best to reread it again after a few times out as you will pick up on many of the tips and techniques once you learn how the basic moves feel. I kept my copy in the car and reread some sections over lunch on my first day. Especially important to read the section on getting off of the chair lift. This has saved me from many falls, while I have watched others flounder and get injured for not following the advice. Still need to take a lesson first time out, but it will all make sense alot sooner.

Summary : Like Surfers Journal... almost

I surf almost every day and can never seem to quench my thirst. My favorite read, by far, of all books and periodicals is The Surfers Journal. It truly captures the many angles of the sport. This book is somewhat in the same vein. It's exhaustive, comprehensive and true to the roots. If you love the history of the sport buy it. If you read Surfing, have never ridden more than one type of board or never traveled to pursue a new wave... don't (do those things instead... THEN buy it). Good bedside book... alongside my Bible.

Summary : Great book that focuses on key skills

This is now one of the best books in my ski library, and I have nearly everything that is currently in print as well as a few things that are no longer in print.

Harald Harb's "Essentials of Skiing" approaches 6 fundamental skill areas which are applicable to all types of skiing: Tipping, Flexing/Extending, Counterbalancing(ie, angulation), counteracting, fore/aft balance and thoughts about the upper body.

A skier at any level can benefit from the insights, mental imagary and drills contained in this book for each of these skill areas. Additionally, there are dryland exercises and other conceptual exercises to help understand and feel what the body is supposed to be doing while skiing.

The pictures and diagrams are all first rate.

One thing I really like about this book is that unlike his previous two books which provided learning progressions towards expert skiing, this book instead provides a toolbox of information and drills to fine tune the skiing of any skier at any level. It focuses individually on the fundamental skills which all skiers use and will help them discover which skills they are deficient in and how to change that fact. The book not only covers what these skills are, but helps you understand the nuances to continually improve your execution of each skill.

Additionally, this book is not biased towards any particular ski method, including Harald Harb's own PMTS system presented in his earlier books(which I also reccomend heartily). Any skier, using any system, can benefit from every word in this book.

But what I really like about this book are all of the many insights and nuances presented about each of these fundamental skills. After you read the chapter on tipping, for example, you will blow the minds of your friends, fellow skiers or ski students with all of your knowledge and insight on how and why we tip our skis to turn. Reading the book I felt like Harald was giving away many of his secret coaching tricks for the price of a book.

The provided DVD is quite a bit shorter than the previous ones, but its also included for free with the book, so who is complaining? More online video content is promised. The video content is primarily a series of demonstrations showing some of the drills which are presented in the book, executed by Harald Harb himself.

In short, this is a great book on how to ski better. All teachers and coaches should own this book. I don't care who you are, if you read this book and practice the drills, your skiing will improve.

Fry's superb book covers the explosive growth of both recreational and competitive skiing with the sharp eye of the veteran insider for telling detail, ranging from the wholesome outdoors to the hedonistic indoors of apres ski.

Summary : A Family Classic

This book was my husband's favorite book in the 60s when he was in elementary school. Now we read it to our children, along with many other Bill Peet books. We love the illustrations, plots and rhymes in Bill Peet's books. Buford is a sweet and innocent mountain goat dealing with a handicapping condition (oversized curling horns) that threatens his safety. Then when he's cornered he discovers a way to use his horns not only to escape the hunters, but to ski. And everyone at the ski resort loves him and makes him welcome. If you like this one, try Eli, Cowardly Clyde, and The Wump World.
