Title : All-Mountain Skier : The Way to Expert Skiing
Author : R. Mark Elling
Rating : 5 Stars out of 5.
Summary : Written for the intermediate skier
Elling wrote this for an intermediate to advanced skier looking to take their skiing to a higher level. Although it does have a good, large section on basic ski skills, it doesn't pretend to coddle a novice through pizza and french fries.
If the next day is a powder day, I'll review the sections on powder and crud. If it hasn't snowed in a while, I'll read the sections on carving and bumps. You can jump around and get exactly what you need out of it, and it's written very well for that purpose.
I highly recommend this book.

Title : Dawson's Guide to Colorado Backcountry Skiing, Volume 1
Author : Louis W. Dawson II
Rating : 5 Stars out of 5.
Summary : Lou Dawson at his best.
No other backcountry skier has carved as many turns in this region as Lou Dawson. Furthermore, he has dedicated himself with the same level of perfection to assembling useful guidebooks, and COLORADO BACKCOUNTRY SKIING is the latest in a long line of classics. The maps are the best I've seen in any guidebook, the photographs are both art and information, and the text infinitely more revealing than that found in his predecessor guidebook, Colorado High Routes. This is a book useful for novices or extremists, afternoon tours or day-long descents. As if this isn't enough, with inimitable style, the trademark Dawson storytelling and insight gained from over three decades of hard-won backcountry experiences makes this book transcend the genre.

Title : Hermann Maier: The Race of My Life
Author : Hermann Maier
Rating : 5 Stars out of 5.
Summary : Inspiring
I have always been a fan of Hermann Maier - not many have the ability to bounce back like he can. I bought the book for my son who is just learning to ski and he really enjoyed the biography. It is a good against all odds story and I would encourage anyone looking for a gift for an aspiring skier to send them a copy.
We have learned that Hermann has a talent for skiing but the guy can write too. The book also teaches good sportsmanship and I want my son to grow up respecting his team mates and have a good attitude. Being a good sport is not just about big sponsors.
We really enjoyed watching him ski and win medals at the Olympics!! And we really enjoyed his book!

Title : Inner Skiing: Revised Edition
Author : W. Timothy Gallwey
Rating : 5 Stars out of 5.
Summary : 26 years of skiing, 6 teaching, and this book is #1
I rad Inner Skiing about 6-7 years ago, and it changed my skiing life. Most everything written about skiing (and other sports, as far as I can tell) is about technique, tricks, how-to's and so on. Inner Skiing is about being a skier - about the fundamental relationship we have to the snow, the mountain, the skis and ourselves.
Discovering who I am as a skier (and what my fears, my doubts, my anxieties look like) have exploded this sport for me. This book works on the emotional, intellectual and physical levels - I use the discovery tools on myself, and with my students, and get incredible results.
Even if you don't ski, this book is great - I've used some of his approaches in many areas of my life. They're fun, they're doable, and they help me focus on what's really there, not what I imagine. And beyond that, they open up incredible opportunities to play, explore and have a great time on the slopes or off.
The earlier edition of the book poo-pood technique - I don't agree with that, and my sense is the book took a bit of a hit for that. There's things to learn about skiing, and taking lessons from a great instructor will make a huge difference whether it's your first day or you've been at it for decades. Nonetheless, I recommend this as book #1 for anyone who wants to ski, or who wants something more from their skiing. ANd for the instructors out there - read it!

Title : Tao of Skiing : Aide Memoire for Cross-Country Skiing Aficionados (The Way to learn to Cross Country Ski)
Author : Lise Meloche
Rating : 5 Stars out of 5.
Summary : Key product
The amazing thing is that... this CD cost me less than a day pass at the local ski site, and saved me years of floundering around on snow. Tao (the way) of skiing is a large web site on a CD-Rom, complete with ample advise (text, images and small movies). The movies were a lot of fun and the text was straight to the point. (The way you would want to be instructed). Personally, I thoroughly enjoyed the package and appreciated what it has done for me... and I'm not hung on an occasional Typo.

Title : Inner Skiing: Revised Edition
Author : W. Timothy Gallwey
Rating : 5 Stars out of 5.
Summary : Transform your skiing
Unlike most of the ski books I read, this book helped me zero in on my attitudes-- all the little mental numbers I did on myself while trying to improve or just enjoy skiing. It helped me focus on areas I had problems with, without heaping criticism on myself. It changed the way I learned by teaching me constructive things to replace that inner critic with. "You look so loose and relaxed," an instructor who had worked with me before commented. This book shows you how to allow yourself to learn unencumbered by fears. Things I read here helped me when I learned to inline skate, and pavement is a lot rougher than snow.

Title : Anyone Can Be an Expert Skier 1: The New Way to Ski (Includes Bonus DVD)
Author : Harald Harb
Rating : 5 Stars out of 5.
Summary : false information
Yes, this is the author of, "Anyone Can Be an Expert Skier." I am doing this to fairly represent a service for the public. Regular ski instructors don't want you to know about the PMTS. They misrepresent our product.
The PMTS Direct Parallel system is growing fast and our system works better than any other system. You can look for yourself on the forum listed below. Have a look at what real skiers are saying, skiers who have experienced the PMTS Direct Parallel first hand.
The poster who posted before me has no clue of what he is talking about, as we do not teach PMTS at Loveland and there are no qualified or accredited PMTS instructors at Loveland.
It maybe there are false instructors promoting themselves as a PMTS teachers. This is wrong and deceptive. Make sure before you book a PMTS instructor. PMTS instructors are listed and qualified, on the web site: www.pmts.org. A regular PSIA instructor can not teach PMTS, that's what this fellow experienced. You check with our web site for real PMTS instructors, who are trained and accredited. Here it is the forum:

Title : Bode: Go Fast, Be Good, Have Fun
Author : Bode Miller
Rating : 5 Stars out of 5.
Summary : Bode is the best
I think Bode is a truly great role model for anyone. He's about the happiest guy I've ever heard of, and he doesn't sugarcoat anything. His book really encouraged me to knuckle down in life and in my sport (long-distance running, in case you cared) and he deserves all the success he gets. Plus he's really funny (I loved the bit about Canadians apologizing for knocking into furniture, cuz my partner is Canadian) and although I hate this word with a passion, inspiring.
This book is great - funny, motivating and at the same time tells his story.

Title : All-Mountain Skier : The Way to Expert Skiing
Author : R. Mark Elling
Rating : 3 Stars out of 5.
Summary : Pretty good book on skiing
I started out really liking this book, but was less impressed by the end. What I liked about the book is the writing style. Its well written, in an engaging way that makes it easy to keep turning the pages. However, I felt that much of the content was a bit disorganized, like a brain-dump of a terrific skier, but not presented in a way to nurture a skier along from one skill to the next. A good skier will be easily bored with this book in my opinion, I learned very little from it.
I offered the book to an intermediate friend of mine, thinking it would be ideal for him. He started out being enchanted by the writing style also, but after a few chapters gave up because the content was too scattered and random in the way its presented. In my opinion this is like a a brain dump from a ski instructor that has learned a lot of "tips" over the years and tried to find an engaging way to publish a bunch of those tips into a book form. I didn't entirely agree with a few points, but overall, I thought most of the tips and technique ideas were accurate and well presented with great drawings to illustrate them. Just kind of random order and so much information that an intermediate would be quickly overwhelmed and not know what to try next to apply any of this. My intermediate friend put the book down after a few chapters and just said it was "too much to think about". Each chapter did provide exercises at the end of the chapter for applying what that chapter talks about. So a committed skier could take them one chapter at a time and go work on it perhaps. However, I thought many of the exercises were just the typical exercises that every PSIA instructor uses to emphasize skills. What if the reader performs the exercises wrong? There were very few if any photos illustrating proper way to do the exercises. And the order of the chapters is not a step ladder of growth..its just random different topics.
I think the book could be useful for an intermediate that doesn't plan to read the whole book and follow it from start to end, but rather keep it as a reference. As they decide they need to work on one particular skill (Let's say after taking a lesson and finding out they are weak in an area), they could read the chapter covering that skill and try the exercises, perhaps remembering that these exercises are very similar to the ones they get in their lesson, and also read the in depth explanations about it..to help sink the ideas into their brain a little better. I see the book as more of a reference tool to come back to, little bits at a time.
I think a ski instructor could benefit from this book also because it provides a lot of examples of how to give a lesson.. It basically *IS* a series of PSIA lessons in a book. An instructor can learn verbalogy to use, exercises to a apply towards specific skills, etc. Of course all of that is also available through standard PSIA literature, but hey...another source doesn't hurt.
For me and my own skiing, there was nothing revolutionary in it. I much prefer "The Skiers Edge" by Ron LeMaster which did indeed teach me some things I didn't know. Its even more technical though...truly a book for experts.

Title : Inner Skiing: Revised Edition
Author : W. Timothy Gallwey
Rating : 5 Stars out of 5.
Summary : An effective and inspiring guide to freeing skiers from fear
I have been reading this book for about twenty years(first publication was November 1977); it was the first of two Inner Game books which, although differing in details, both transformed my attitude to and my performance in the sports I love. I was fortunate to have been given it by a patient who was an Inner Game instructor (or rather, facilitator). If Inner Skiing has only now (1997) become widely available, thanks to the Internet, a generation of British skiers has lost out; for years it has been available only in the USA and to members of Inner Game workshops. With examples from life and from Inner Skiing workshops which are encouraging, inspiring, and often emotionally touching, the book helps skiers of all standards to confront their fears and to tap into the mind's and the body's unconscious store of knowledge and skills; the fears of "flying", falling, speed, injury, failure, and the fear of looking stupid; the knowledge locked into Gallwey's Self 2, a Self which, he teaches us, is ours too. Where his Self 1 is trying, tense, unsure, scared and controlling, Self 2 is free, relaxed, effortless, powerful, and instinctive. Gallwey and his co-author Bob Kriegel, a more experienced skier than he and a psychologist, equip their readers with simple but highly effective keys to Self 2, enabling us increasingly to find in skiing the exhilaration of the breakthrough run, and unlocking the confidence without which the sport can be an exercise in anxiety. Most of us in the UK only get to ski once a year. I reread Inner Skiing annually as an essential pre-ski exercise, and if I don't read every word I never fail to take a dose of inspiration from the paragraph in the last chapter which begins "Inside us all is a mountain with no top and no bottom. The skiing there is perfect. The snow is made of pure peace and there is not a trace of Self 1 interference.................Skiing this inner mountain has the power to satisfy the human longing to know oneself and the reason for which one was born." You may guess from this that Timothy Gallwey's is the inner game of life, with applications far beyond the realms of sport, as his other writing attests. Dr. Basil Lee, London, England.

Summary : Finally a snowboarding guide written for women!
This book has help me a lot, and kept me from giving up! The photos in the book is very helpful for me to visualize the body position. The text is simple and clear, without extra useless words. The book made snowboarding sound really fun and interesting, which encouraged me a lot when I went through hard time learning the sport. I really like the fact that this book was written for women by a woman. Afterall, women do snowboard differently than men!
