Title : Ollie's Ski Trip
Author : Elsa Maartman Beskow
Rating : 5 Stars out of 5.
Summary : Awesome story my son loves it!

We love all of her books and buy them 1 at a time as we can afford them. In an age of big in your face pop up books and childrens books that make your eyes hurt these books are a wonderful find. As always the illustrations are beautiful - I read all the reviews first but few had actual specifics about the actual invdividual stories of her books, so that's what I've done here. I hope it helps others know what wonderful books they are. I wish they were easier to find in Canada.

This story is about Ollie - his father gets him a pair of skis for his 6th birthday. He waited longingly for winter to come. He was so excited when it did that he wanted to go use his skis. His mum made sure he ate his porridge and was dressed warmly before he headed out. He came across Jack Frost who takes him to King Winters castle. They come across Mrs. Thaw who is trying to melt the snow but Jack Frost chases her off and breathes on everything to make it all frozen again. They go off to king winters castle which is beautiful and built of polished ice. He meets king winter and gets to see people sitting around the fire working away happily making ski boots and women knitting thick socks. In another room he sees girls knitting ski mitts and embroidering and in a big workshop some boys were building skis and tobggans and sledges and skate blades. They were trying to finish them all for everyone before Christmas. When they all took a break, Ollie gets to go outside and ski, skate and built snowmen and big snowcastles and have a huge snowball fight. When the break was over the children went back inside and Jack Frost offered to take Ollie home, so they harnessed a reindeer and had him pull them on Ollie's skis. Jack Frost said goodbye at the edge of the forest. Come Christmas morning Ollie was so excited to find a pair of magnificent skates for himself and a toboggan for his little brother. He knew at once Jack Frost had paid him a visit! He used his skates nearly every day that winter and they tried to get Mrs. Thaw to not come in the spring but she came and melted all the snow. Then spring came driving up in her airy carriage, and curtsied to Mrs. Thaw and Ollie decided he really liked Mrs. Thaw after all. Wonderful story!

Title : Anyone Can Be an Expert Skier 1: The New Way to Ski (Includes Bonus DVD)
Author : Harald Harb
Rating : 5 Stars out of 5.
Summary : Tested 7 years

I literally learned to ski from Harald and Diana (I started skiing 1999 spring)

Info contained in this book and exercises described have been tested on me

I got 4...

Title : Harald Harb's Essentials of Skiing (Includes Free DVD)
Author : Harald Harb
Rating : 3 Stars out of 5.
Summary : I like it! But...

I couldn't wait to get this book after having read Harald Harb's ACBES 1 2. I was hungry for a simpler version of those two books and I think Harb delivered.

At first read, the book is much more reader-friendly than the two ACBES books. It's great that Harb focused on movements of the whole body and not just the foot, as he grossly overanalyzed in the previous two books.

My only major problem with his books in general is that while his system is superior to any other instructional skiing methodology, Harb yet to learn the art of user-friendly explanations rather than getting too academic. But "Essentials" is the closest he's come and it feels good.

The accompanying DVD's production quality isn't as good as the previous discs. It's only about 15 min. and at the end he reveals it's basically a teaser for another set of DVDs he'll release soon. It got into topics like Counterbalancing and flexion so early on. How about basic stance? How about arm position? This is where I was disappointed in the lack of simplicity in this and many other DVDs. If you're going to title your series "Anyone Can Be an Expert Skier" or "Essentials of Skiing," you had better make sure that "Anyone" can understand how to even start the "Essentials!" (Do we have to leave simplicity to Marty Henckleman's old-school videos?)

One thing I wish all ski gurus would keep in mind is that the target market for skiing instruction is people who, yes, want to learn to ski... but first and foremost ski to have FUN. There's a huge opening for instruction that's easy and enjoyable too without being so academic. The closest I've seen to being both thorough and valuable is Harb's colleague Lito Tejada Flores-- who's taken Harb's PMTS and adapted a more Zen-like lesson for the novice skier.

I would recommend "Essentials," though, for anyone (like me) who thought Harb's ACBES books were a bit too academic for such simple, ingenious teaching technique as PMTS.

Title : Dawson's Guide to Colorado Backcountry Skiing, Volume 1
Author : Louis W. Dawson II
Rating : 5 Stars out of 5.
Summary : Lou Dawson at his best.

No other backcountry skier has carved as many turns in this region as Lou Dawson. Furthermore, he has dedicated himself with the same level of perfection to assembling useful guidebooks, and COLORADO BACKCOUNTRY SKIING is the latest in a long line of classics. The maps are the best I've seen in any guidebook, the photographs are both art and information, and the text infinitely more revealing than that found in his predecessor guidebook, Colorado High Routes. This is a book useful for novices or extremists, afternoon tours or day-long descents. As if this isn't enough, with inimitable style, the trademark Dawson storytelling and insight gained from over three decades of hard-won backcountry experiences makes this book transcend the genre.

Title : Hermann Maier: The Race of My Life
Author : Hermann Maier
Rating : 5 Stars out of 5.
Summary : Inspiring

I have always been a fan of Hermann Maier - not many have the ability to bounce back like he can. I bought the book for my son who is just learning to ski and he really enjoyed the biography. It is a good against all odds story and I would encourage anyone looking for a gift for an aspiring skier to send them a copy.

We have learned that Hermann has a talent for skiing but the guy can write too. The book also teaches good sportsmanship and I want my son to grow up respecting his team mates and have a good attitude. Being a good sport is not just about big sponsors.

We really enjoyed watching him ski and win medals at the Olympics!! And we really enjoyed his book!

Title : Snowboarding: A Woman's Guide (Ragged Mountain Press Woman's Guide)
Author : Julia Carlson
Rating : 4 Stars out of 5.
Summary : It works, BUT...

As a snowboard instructor, I opened this book with hesitation - I have found most snowboard 'guides' or 'instruction manuals' to offer tips and technique that differ greatly from the proper technique I have been trained to teach and have very successfully used for the last 6 years. However, I found this text to offer good general tips, especially when it comes to getting yourself well-equipped with the proper sized equipment. The pictures are very clear and, considering that the designer/writer/person who took the photos did not have the rider dress in the most extreme of 90's board fashion, they still look stylish today.

In all, a useful book for someone who is a text-based learner. A word of caution to those venturing out for their first time: a lesson from a certified instructor will get you started much better than any book or 'friend who knows what he/she is doing' ever will.

Title : Bode: Go Fast, Be Good, Have Fun
Author : Bode Miller
Rating : 5 Stars out of 5.
Summary : Bode is the best

I think Bode is a truly great role model for anyone. He's about the happiest guy I've ever heard of, and he doesn't sugarcoat anything. His book really encouraged me to knuckle down in life and in my sport (long-distance running, in case you cared) and he deserves all the success he gets. Plus he's really funny (I loved the bit about Canadians apologizing for knocking into furniture, cuz my partner is Canadian) and although I hate this word with a passion, inspiring.
This book is great - funny, motivating and at the same time tells his story.

Title : Anyone Can Be an Expert Skier 2: Powder, Bumps, and Carving (Includes Bonus DVD)
Author : Harald Harb
Rating : 5 Stars out of 5.
Summary : Excellent book for expert skiers

This book is essential if you want to learn the PMTS system which Harald Harb created. I would recommend that you do that. This is a book for experts and assumes you already have learned to ski, but it would be very useful even if you are a new skier. Just realize that it won't teach you how to snowplow or stem-christi. The ski season is over now (April 06) and I got this too late to use it for 05-06. But, I can tell you that this book is very well presented. Without it I would have had a very hard time understanding how to carve my skis using this technique or understanding why I wouldn't want to make some mistakes that would not be obvious. Important details are revealed in the book that I have found nowhere else. The DVD that comes with the book is a powerful presentation that follows the book's format. The DVD shows some excellent examples of how to do exercises and how to actually ski the technique. It contains demonstrations of using the technique in many types of difficult terrain. This includes bumps which I am particularly interested in where carving is an especially difficult task. I was already aware of this system from several other sources. Without this book, I doubt that I would ever have been able to do it correctly. The book and the DVD work very well together.

Title : All-Mountain Skier : The Way to Expert Skiing
Author : R. Mark Elling
Rating : 5 Stars out of 5.
Summary : All-Mountain Skier

I've bought three books about skiing recently and this is the best. I'm an aspiring expert skier. This book is really helping me reach my goals. The book has a chapter each on the repertoire of fundamental skills like stance, steering, outside ski dominance, edging, pressure control, etc. The book would great for that alone. But the book in later chapters explains how to use these tools to carve, ski powder, crud, bumps, steeps and trees. I'm reading this book again and again. It's the bible for people wanting to be and expert skier.

Title : Skiing for Dummies
Author : Allen St. John
Rating : 1 Stars out of 5.
Summary : Common sense

When buying a book, you would hardly expect to get only a pieceof common sense for your money. Unfortunately, this is the case with thisbook. Its main message is "get yourself a skiing instructor and learn how to ski". I agree, noone learns how to ski (swim, play basketball, etc.) from a book only, but nonetheless the book should advise on techniques, not tell one that he/she needs a coach. It's pretty obvious, even for a dummy.

Title : Allen Mike's Really Cool Backcountry Ski Book (Falcon Guides Backcountry Skiing)
Author : Allen O'Bannon
Rating : 5 Stars out of 5.
Summary : get it get it

it is awesome! these guys are nols instructors. one guy provides the incredibly helpful commentary while the other guy provides the humorous illustrations. you will be howling with laughter as you read this great book. my bet is that humor/laughter aids the memorization process. that is key in this case because there are some truly essential tips in this book! not to be without! can't wait to wintercamp this year. they also have a telemark tips book which is very good too...

Title : Everything the Instructors Never Told You About Mogul Skiing
Author : Dan Dipiro
Rating : 5 Stars out of 5.
Summary : The title says it all

If you are a good-to-expert groomed-trail skier who has been frustrated when trying to use those skills in the bumps, there's a reason. Contrary to what so many of us believe, mogul skiing isn't just a harder version of carving turns down groomers. It's a totally different animal, and once Dan DiPiro explains it in his outstanding new book, you'll understand why all that effort in the bumps has so far not produced any results.

The title is apt. Ski instructors at most resorts, unless you are lucky enough to find a true moguls expert, tend to believe that the basic skills they teach to all skiers are equally applicable in the bumps. But they're not. As DiPiro explains, basic techniques like carving and hip angulation will actually prevent you from skiing the bumps efficiently, while other techniques -- such as keeping your skis close together and maintaining a more erect "home posture" -- will suddenly make you feel at home in the bumps as never before.

In a series of logically organized chapters, each with photos, easy-to-follow tips and practice drills, DiPiro -- who is an accomplished moguls competitor and now teaches skiing in New Hampshire -- explains the specialized techniques that help demystify the bumps. While DiPiro is a moguls competitor, the book is written to benefit any good skier who wants to ski the moguls better, more efficiently and, since so many mogul runs are directly under the lifts, more stylishly. If there's any shortcoming, it's in the section on line choice. Most of us could use more help in figuring the best way through the irregular mogul fields that dominate eastern skiing, but it may be that a video, rather than a book, is the best way to illustrate those choices.

Even if you never venture into a "pure" mogul run, DiPiro's techniques will help you ski through any run that's been chewed up by being over-skied, or hasn't been groomed in a while, or has gotten bumpy and irregular from a day's heavy snow. If you're a good skier who wants to "ski the whole mountain" but needs the techniques to do it, this is the book for you.

Now, if only he would make a downloadable video to bring onto the slopes in your digital camera or camera phone!
