Title : Allen Mike's Really Cool Telemark Tips
Author : Allen O'Bannon
Rating : 4 Stars out of 5.
Summary : Helpful pocket book to refer to while skiing.
I've skied with this book for one season now and found that the tips are relevant and enjoyable. Both the beginner and expert can learn from this book.
Personally, I've eliminated most of my bad skiing habits and not created any new ones, which is really praise. I've found handy tips on how to explain what I do to others while in class. This book has become an "on hill" teaching tool and stays in my day pack just for that purpose.
This compendium of "illustrations" keeps me fresh while teaching, although the book is by no means intended for an instructor. The graphics are relevant, funny, and, relate the sense of joy that both authours must feel about telemarking.
The book's a giggle to re-read, for me, it can stimulate the sense of being on the snow even during an August heat wave.

Title : Bode: Go Fast, Be Good, Have Fun
Author : Bode Miller
Rating : 5 Stars out of 5.
Summary : Have fun, be bad, be the Bodiest
This is a really interesting quick read. Bode is a fascinating character. The first 53 pages of the book mention little about ski racing and focus instead on Bode's family background and outdoors lifestyle. He comes from a clan of rugged outdoors maverick. The press has described his lifestyle as austere, growing up in a cabin in the woods with no electricity or running hot water. In the book, Bode describes his childhood in enchanting ways. He had a freedom to explore nature, and experience the elements. He loved every minute. Every moment was an opportunity to be challenged and have fun. He never had time to be bored or watch TV. So, it did not matter that he did not have one.
Bode is just an all around world-class athlete. In high school he was the tennis state champion. He also was an excellent varsity soccer player. Later in 2002, he won the CBS Superstars competition beating out a bunch of NFL and NBA pros at various "Survivor-like" events. His ski coaches encouraged him to pursue snowboarding racing instead of ski racing. He placed 2nd in a national snowboarding race. But, his heart was set on skiing. However, his snowboarding adventure would change skiing forever.
Bode was a pioneer in racing on shaped skis. He liked the side cut of snowboards better than the straight alpine skis. He pressured a K2 ski rep relentlessly for K2 to develop the first shaped racing ski. Bode succeeded in getting K2 to manufacture such customized parabolic skis for him. And, the rest is history. Bode and his shaped skis took the world by storm. Because of Bode everybody quickly shifted to shaped skis, as they carved better and faster turns. According to Ingemar Stenmark, the living legend of alpine skiing shaped skis revolutionized racing technique much more than anything else.
Since his early high school days, Bode developed an all out technique that results in many falls, but also many wins. This originally drove his coaches crazy. But, now coaches support this low percentage but high success rate approach.
In the opening of the 2004-05 FIS World Cup, Bode had the best start in the history of alpine racing. He won 6 of the first 10 races. He won in all four disciplines in the same season in just 16 days. Only two other skiers had duplicated this feat, and it took them nearly an entire season to do it. He describes this apex of his career near the end of the book. The book's timing is perfect as it ends on this high note.
Ever since, his career has gone downhill (no pun intended). He still managed to win the 2004-05 FIS World Cup. But, that was because of his 16-day miracle. He skied poorly the rest of the season. The 2005-06 season, including the 2006 Turin Winter Olympics were disappointing. At the Olympics, he looked out of shape compared to the Austrians.
Increasingly weird statements have come out of his mouth. Within the book, he indicated that he might start a pro tour with sponsored teams such as in bike racing that would compete on the FIS World Cup. That was a strange leap. He also indicated that (maybe because of his pro tour concept) he might not participate in the Turin 2006 Winter Olympics. He ultimately did; but performed poorly. Later he accused Lance Armstrong and Barry Bonds to take steroids. With hindsight, nobody will blame him for mentioning Bonds. But mentioning Armstrong caused a huge devaluation in his advertising potential.
Bode's ultimate fall from grace does not detract from this very original biography. The book is enjoyable whether you are into skiing or not. Heck, as Bode indicates throughout the book he is more into having fun than skiing (if the two shall meet so be it). That's at the essence of his phlegmatic charisma, his successes, and his downfall. If you enjoy this biography and also like tennis, I strongly recommend John McEnroe's "You Can't Be Serious," Boris Becker's "The Player," and Ilie Nastase's "Mr. Nastase." They are all multifaceted characters.

Title : Free-Heel Skiing: Telemark and Parallel Techniques for All Conditions (Mountaineers Outdoor Expert Series)
Author : Paul Parker
Rating : 5 Stars out of 5.
Summary : Truly a bible of free heel skiing
Great book that all free heel skiers should read. Eye opener is that "Telemark" is just a turn - free heel skiing is hell of a lot more. Good reasoning why you should do the tele the way Mr Parker is proposing. This book changed my free heel skiing for good.

It is incredibly suited for all beginner and intermediate tele-skiers.

Title : Tao of Skiing : Aide Memoire for Cross-Country Skiing Aficionados (The Way to learn to Cross Country Ski)
Author : Lise Meloche
Rating : 5 Stars out of 5.
Summary : What a fun way to study technique
A CD-ROM; I do not know why someone did not think of this before. It is great. I spent hours digesting hundreds of hints on everything from technique, to training and playing the fun and informative Quicktime videos. It is not often that you can look into a decade worth of training diary entries and training notes of a World Cup Gold medalist.

Title : The Complete Snowboarder
Author : Jeff Bennett
Rating : 4 Stars out of 5.
Summary : The book was great.
I really liked the book The Complete Snowboarder. It is full of a lot of useful information on how to get started snowboarding. It explains not only the basics but also how to do tricks. I would recommend this book to anyone who has even the slightest interest in snowboarding because once they read it they won't be able to wait for the snow to fall.

Title : Anyone Can Be an Expert Skier 1: The New Way to Ski (Includes Bonus DVD)
Author : Harald Harb
Rating : 5 Stars out of 5.
Summary : false information
Yes, this is the author of, "Anyone Can Be an Expert Skier." I am doing this to fairly represent a service for the public. Regular ski instructors don't want you to know about the PMTS. They misrepresent our product.
The PMTS Direct Parallel system is growing fast and our system works better than any other system. You can look for yourself on the forum listed below. Have a look at what real skiers are saying, skiers who have experienced the PMTS Direct Parallel first hand.
The poster who posted before me has no clue of what he is talking about, as we do not teach PMTS at Loveland and there are no qualified or accredited PMTS instructors at Loveland.
It maybe there are false instructors promoting themselves as a PMTS teachers. This is wrong and deceptive. Make sure before you book a PMTS instructor. PMTS instructors are listed and qualified, on the web site: www.pmts.org. A regular PSIA instructor can not teach PMTS, that's what this fellow experienced. You check with our web site for real PMTS instructors, who are trained and accredited. Here it is the forum:

Title : Everything the Instructors Never Told You About Mogul Skiing
Author : Dan Dipiro
Rating : 5 Stars out of 5.
Summary : Best and probably only book on bump skiing
I've taken many bump lessons, and have attended weekend mogul camps, and they have ranged from being taught 'mogul survival', which is not what I need, to spending a weekend with great mogul skiers, who point out a mistake or two that your making, and usually teach with the 'watch me' approach.
Dan's book breaks down bump skiing in clear consice terms. He breaks the bumps down to several basic skills, and provides drills, to help them sink in. After my first read, I concentrated on the 'Home posture' and 'rotary turn' drills, and found that I was going into the mogul field in a crouched stance and would end up launching off of the 4th or 5th bump. The rotary drills got my lower body moving more seperate from the upper. After weekend one, I was putting together runs of 10 bumps before being spit out.
Reread for Weekend two and focused working on 'Absorption and Extention'; my biggest problem. Started with the drills, which were tricky at first, since your concentrating so hard, but I started getting a better feel after the first day. Second day, they opened WildFire (killington) which had snow blown all night and was moguls top to bottom. Continued working on pulling the first three skills together, and added some better line choices. (No hops yet;) My last two runs were top to bottom with only a single stop to let my heart rate drop below 170. These were my first full bump runs, where I was the guy blowing by the people struggling on the hill, rather than being one of them.
To benefit from the book, you need to be a solid intermediate skier who skis single black diamonds; can hold a parallel with their boots together on a groomed slope; and can make it through a mogul field. (with some trepidation and fear, but still make it.) You can benefit greatly from the book. If your an advanced skier (The term 'expert' I reserve for folks who can ski bumps, ice, steeps, crud, and powder) and like me can handle most anything except the bumps, this is perfect for you.
My skiing buddy (my wife), is blown away at the transformation, and skies ahead so she can watch my runs. So, Yes this book can make you more attractive to members of the opposite sex. ;) Thanks Dan!

Title : Bode: Go Fast, Be Good, Have Fun
Author : Bode Miller
Rating : 5 Stars out of 5.
Summary : Bode is the best
I think Bode is a truly great role model for anyone. He's about the happiest guy I've ever heard of, and he doesn't sugarcoat anything. His book really encouraged me to knuckle down in life and in my sport (long-distance running, in case you cared) and he deserves all the success he gets. Plus he's really funny (I loved the bit about Canadians apologizing for knocking into furniture, cuz my partner is Canadian) and although I hate this word with a passion, inspiring.
This book is great - funny, motivating and at the same time tells his story.

Title : The Essential Guide to Skiing: 201 Things Every Skier Must Know
Author : Ron LeMaster
Rating : 5 Stars out of 5.
Summary : Great book for any skiier (beginner or expert).
I usually don't write reviews for purchases I make. If I'm having to write a review for this one, it really means something.
I found this book very useful and informative. This book covers everything from boots and skis to vacations and lesssons. This book is almost like an Encyclopedia for anything skiing related. Skiiers of all caliber can greatly benefit from reading this book. Great read!

Title : Snowboarding: A Woman's Guide (Ragged Mountain Press Woman's Guide)
Author : Julia Carlson
Rating : 5 Stars out of 5.
Summary : Great Guide for Women
This book really helped me prepare for my first day snowboarding. I used a lot of the techniques presented on my first day. The authors gives great tips and there are tons of photos. She explains everything really well. There is also a section on what to look for when buying equipment which will come in handy once you get better at snowboarding. It is a great book for women because it is written for women from a woman's point of view. Extremely helpfull!

Title : Inner Skiing: Revised Edition
Author : W. Timothy Gallwey
Rating : 5 Stars out of 5.
Summary : Transform your skiing
Unlike most of the ski books I read, this book helped me zero in on my attitudes-- all the little mental numbers I did on myself while trying to improve or just enjoy skiing. It helped me focus on areas I had problems with, without heaping criticism on myself. It changed the way I learned by teaching me constructive things to replace that inner critic with. "You look so loose and relaxed," an instructor who had worked with me before commented. This book shows you how to allow yourself to learn unencumbered by fears. Things I read here helped me when I learned to inline skate, and pavement is a lot rougher than snow.
