Title : Allen Mike's Really Cool Telemark Tips Author : Allen O'Bannon Rating : 5 Stars out of 5. Summary : This book Rocks
I rented telemark gear and bought this book at the same time. It was fabulous. I had never tried telemarking before and had no clue what I was doing. I have skied for 20 year, switch to snowboarding 6 years ago, but the itch to learn something new sprang up again. I wanted to be able to go backcountry, but first I need a mode of transportation. Telemarking I thought, but how in the world do I do that?? It looked so difficult.
This book was the answer! I read it cover to cover, that isn't saying much seeing how most of it is drawing and diagrams, but it taught me so much. The picture are worth a thousand words. Every drawing gives you so much information, a visual on what you are supposed to look like. I still have no idea if I look like that, but at least I believe I do.
I had actually taken a lesson first, no offense to the instructor, but I got so much more out of the book. It wasn't an hour of information, it was day after day of information, I could read something and try it out. Ahhh that is what I was doing wrong!
If you want to learn how to telemark buy this book, if you have been telemarking and still aren't sure what you are doing wrong, buy this book. It is funny and entertaining as well as extremely helpful in learning how to telemark. Good luck and enjoy!!
Title : Anyone Can Be an Expert Skier 1: The New Way to Ski (Includes Bonus DVD) Author : Harald Harb Rating : 5 Stars out of 5. Summary : Great tutorial book
This book has what you need to make progress as a skier. The photo sequences are highlighted to point out the objective. Any individual lesson or exercise can be used independently - so you can pick one as a refresher to practice on. The lessons are well sequenced with accurate and detailed descriptions of exercises. The book is readable and coherent.
There are a few of defenders of Professional Ski Instructors of America (PSIA) and other ski instruction books that have posted here and given what I think are unfair low ratings. I think they are somewhat narrow in their criticism. They seem to focus on the fact that he is not preaching the "approved" PSIA method. So what? Is there only one way to teach someone how to ski?
I personally used this book and advanced my ski skill and confidence in a few weeks, after having stagnated for a couple of years. I had taken numerous lessons from PSIA intructors and progress was slow. My opinion is that most self-motivated skiers could benefit from the lessons in this book (at a low price). Give it an honest try and then go pay $75 for a PSIA "approved" lesson and see which one gave you more insight and advancement. Oh my, Mr. Harb challenged the Ski Instructors PSIA church!
Title : Allen Mike's Really Cool Backcountry Ski Book (Falcon Guides Backcountry Skiing) Author : Allen O'Bannon Rating : 5 Stars out of 5. Summary : The best winter camping guide ever?
There are two types of winter campers: those who have this book and those who need it. Perhaps if you are very very experienced you don't need it but otherwise, get it! Allen wrote a short, but information full book, that is easy and fun to read quickly and jamn packed with a mix of basic functional knowledge, extra tidbits that are good to know, and all kinds of little tricks he has discovered over the years.
Title : Buford the Little Bighorn Author : Bill Peet Rating : 5 Stars out of 5. Summary : A Family Classic
This book was my husband's favorite book in the 60s when he was in elementary school. Now we read it to our children, along with many other Bill Peet books. We love the illustrations, plots and rhymes in Bill Peet's books. Buford is a sweet and innocent mountain goat dealing with a handicapping condition (oversized curling horns) that threatens his safety. Then when he's cornered he discovers a way to use his horns not only to escape the hunters, but to ski. And everyone at the ski resort loves him and makes him welcome. If you like this one, try Eli, Cowardly Clyde, and The Wump World.
Title : Everything the Instructors Never Told You About Mogul Skiing Author : Dan Dipiro Rating : 5 Stars out of 5. Summary : At last, a practical book on mogul skiing.
First, I am 63 and have been skiing for 40+ years. I now live in Southern California but generally ski at either Mammoth or Snowbird. I can turn my skis right and left and can usually get down most of the in-bounds trails at most resorts including the mogul runs. I like it all, but I really like bump skiing.
To that end, I want to give Dan DiPiro a big THANK YOU for writing Everything... . Frankly, my experience suggests he's absolutely right when he says that most ski instructors do not know how to ski bumps and try to teach people to ski bumps using racing technique. So while I do OK in the bumps, I have never quite mastered skiing the zipper line the bump skiers use.
Of course, it never dawned on my until read Dan's book, that the problem was not me, but my not knowing the techniques that the pro bump skiers used. I found the way in which he broke down the differences between trail and mogul skiing to make a lot of sense and I am looking forward to using the exercises he includes in his book to develop an alternate skill set that I can use to improve my bump skiing. So here's to Dan - for making a major contribution to skiing in general and my bump skiing in particular.
Title : All-Mountain Skier : The Way to Expert Skiing Author : R. Mark Elling Rating : 5 Stars out of 5. Summary : Great for Serious Skiers
This book is detailed and comprehensible. Just right for someone seeking to move up intermediate to higher challenges.
Warning: If you are not deeply serious about skiing this book may have too much detail for you. For example, proper boot fitting gets pages, not paragraphs.
Many of the drills proposed imply steady access to slopes and the time and discipline to spend hours working on improvement.
There are useful ideas for those of us who ski a few times a year and hope to improve somewhat, but we must treat the book like a reference-- look up what you need to work on and do that for one trip.
Still, a great book.
Title : Hermann Maier: The Race of My Life Author : Hermann Maier Rating : 5 Stars out of 5. Summary : Skiingwith the best of the best!
I thought that Hermann Maier wrote a very candid and authentic book about his victories and struggles in the world of expert skiing...a help to the layman and an inspiration to the professionals about not giving up and how to reach for those goals/dreams!
This book is a realistic perspective of a true hero and athlete and it's a great read for young and old!
I enjoyed it very much and I applaud Hermann for his perspective on life and on skiing.
Title : Trail Atlas of Michigan: Mountain Biking, Hiking, Cross-Country Skiing, and Nature Trails. Author : Dennis Hansen Rating : 5 Stars out of 5. Summary : Great resource
So far, every trail description and thedirections to get there have been right on.
Title : Inner Skiing: Revised Edition Author : W. Timothy Gallwey Rating : 5 Stars out of 5. Summary : An effective and inspiring guide to freeing skiers from fear
I have been reading this book for about twenty years(first publication was November 1977); it was the first of two Inner Game books which, although differing in details, both transformed my attitude to and my performance in the sports I love. I was fortunate to have been given it by a patient who was an Inner Game instructor (or rather, facilitator). If Inner Skiing has only now (1997) become widely available, thanks to the Internet, a generation of British skiers has lost out; for years it has been available only in the USA and to members of Inner Game workshops. With examples from life and from Inner Skiing workshops which are encouraging, inspiring, and often emotionally touching, the book helps skiers of all standards to confront their fears and to tap into the mind's and the body's unconscious store of knowledge and skills; the fears of "flying", falling, speed, injury, failure, and the fear of looking stupid; the knowledge locked into Gallwey's Self 2, a Self which, he teaches us, is ours too. Where his Self 1 is trying, tense, unsure, scared and controlling, Self 2 is free, relaxed, effortless, powerful, and instinctive. Gallwey and his co-author Bob Kriegel, a more experienced skier than he and a psychologist, equip their readers with simple but highly effective keys to Self 2, enabling us increasingly to find in skiing the exhilaration of the breakthrough run, and unlocking the confidence without which the sport can be an exercise in anxiety. Most of us in the UK only get to ski once a year. I reread Inner Skiing annually as an essential pre-ski exercise, and if I don't read every word I never fail to take a dose of inspiration from the paragraph in the last chapter which begins "Inside us all is a mountain with no top and no bottom. The skiing there is perfect. The snow is made of pure peace and there is not a trace of Self 1 interference.................Skiing this inner mountain has the power to satisfy the human longing to know oneself and the reason for which one was born." You may guess from this that Timothy Gallwey's is the inner game of life, with applications far beyond the realms of sport, as his other writing attests. Dr. Basil Lee, London, England.
Title : Snow Sense: A Guide to Evaluating Snow Avalanche Hazard Author : Jill A. Fredston Rating : 5 Stars out of 5. Summary : Review from Outside Mag.,The Outside Canon:A Few Great Books
"Avalanches are not acts of God. This valuable book details how to read terrain, snowpack, and weather variables to determine the possiblities of avalanche and how to save yourself in case of one.
Title : Allen Mike's Really Cool Telemark Tips Author : Allen O'Bannon Rating : 4 Stars out of 5. Summary : Helpful pocket book to refer to while skiing.
I've skied with this book for one season now and found that the tips are relevant and enjoyable. Both the beginner and expert can learn from this book. Personally, I've eliminated most of my bad skiing habits and not created any new ones, which is really praise. I've found handy tips on how to explain what I do to others while in class. This book has become an "on hill" teaching tool and stays in my day pack just for that purpose. This compendium of "illustrations" keeps me fresh while teaching, although the book is by no means intended for an instructor. The graphics are relevant, funny, and, relate the sense of joy that both authours must feel about telemarking. The book's a giggle to re-read, for me, it can stimulate the sense of being on the snow even during an August heat wave.
Title : Bode: Go Fast, Be Good, Have Fun Author : Bode Miller Rating : 5 Stars out of 5. Summary : As much a winner as he is.
2005 overall world cup champion Bode Miller was raised in New Hampshire in a rural cabin without electricity or indoor plumbing, so his roots are as unconventional as his rise to become a top sports star. GO FAST, BE GOOD, HAVE FUN is an autobiography which recounts his philosophy in life as much as his sports experience: he tells of the world of competitive skiing and how he bucked conventional wisdom to rise to the top, and his personal theories shine brightly throughout. GO FAST, BE GOOD, HAVE FUN is packed with first-person 'you are there' adventure and insights: paired with Miller's personal formula for success, it's as much a winner as he is.

Title : Backcountry Skiing Adventures: Vermont and New York: Classic Ski and Snowboard Tours in Vermont and New York Author : David Goodman Rating : 5 Stars out of 5. Summary : An absolutely user friendly outdoor guide
A superbly presented compendium of two dozen classic ski and snowboard tours throughout the states of Vermont and New York, David Goodman's Backcountry Skiing Adventures offers the best routes, equipment and backcountry riding tips; topographic maps and photos for each tour; information on avalanche awareness, winter camping, gear, safety, and first aid. This absolutely user friendly outdoor guide is a "must" for anyone planning a skiing or snowboarding excursion in Vermont or New York. Also very highly recommended is the other title in this outstanding Appalachian Mountain Club "Backcountry Skiing Adventures" series: Classic Ski and Snowboard Tours in Maine and New Hampshire.
Title : Tao of Skiing : Aide Memoire for Cross-Country Skiing Aficionados (The Way to learn to Cross Country Ski) Author : Lise Meloche Rating : 5 Stars out of 5. Summary : Great format and delivery - Well Done.
The CD-ROM is packed full of great advice delivered in easy to read point form (like an Aide Memoire). Each sentence or teaching point stands on its own. I could take one gem of knowledge at a time; without having to wade through pages of pretentious prose. The explanations were very precise and most meaningful to those with some skiing experience under their belt. Best read with an open mind.
Title : Snowboarding: A Woman's Guide (Ragged Mountain Press Woman's Guide) Author : Julia Carlson Rating : 4 Stars out of 5. Summary : Great book for women who want to learn to snowboard!
I am a 24 year old female who has been secretly yearning to try snowboarding. I haven't because I didn't know what stuff to rent or buy, or how not to look stupid. After reading this book, I can't wait to try it. Great explanations of what gear is best for women and why, and detailed explanations of what to do once you are on the snow. Very lighthearted and encouraging tone.
