Title : Skiing for Dummies Author : Allen St. John Rating : 1 Stars out of 5. Summary : Common sense
When buying a book, you would hardly expect to get only a pieceof common sense for your money. Unfortunately, this is the case with thisbook. Its main message is "get yourself a skiing instructor and learn how to ski". I agree, noone learns how to ski (swim, play basketball, etc.) from a book only, but nonetheless the book should advise on techniques, not tell one that he/she needs a coach. It's pretty obvious, even for a dummy.
Title : Hermann Maier: The Race of My Life Author : Hermann Maier Rating : 3 Stars out of 5. Summary : Amazing Comeback
Herman's book can be subtitled "Don't count me down and out just yet...." And this is the recurring theme throughout.
Perhaps it's the translation into English, but the Herminator comes across as not only a great athlete, but a little too self-centered! It's as everything revolves around his being and return to winning, no make that crushing his competitors and not just the race hill. You can almost "see and hear" the snorting, growling, grimacing in the start gate as you read this book - yet you don't really get a true feeling of what all this means to him other than competition, endorsements, and being the all conquering focus for the Austrians - not even his team mates. But somewhat like Bode Miller, Maier came from "outside" the alpine racing mainstream and perhaps that's why he appears to remain somewhat outside the norm.
I read Bode's book at the same time and in the end, you sure know which guy you want to sit and have a beer with or ski a run with.
Title : The Complete Snowboarder Author : Jeff Bennett Rating : 5 Stars out of 5. Summary : (no title)
This book is great for begginers and also explains advanced tricks and techniques like methods, spins, cliff drops, carving and explains a little about racing and competative snowboarding. It also gives you usefull info like what to eat before you go, warm-ups, getting on and off chairlifts, ect.
Title : Anyone Can Be an Expert Skier 2: Powder, Bumps, and Carving (Includes Bonus DVD) Author : Harald Harb Rating : 5 Stars out of 5. Summary : Excellent book for expert skiers
This book is essential if you want to learn the PMTS system which Harald Harb created. I would recommend that you do that. This is a book for experts and assumes you already have learned to ski, but it would be very useful even if you are a new skier. Just realize that it won't teach you how to snowplow or stem-christi. The ski season is over now (April 06) and I got this too late to use it for 05-06. But, I can tell you that this book is very well presented. Without it I would have had a very hard time understanding how to carve my skis using this technique or understanding why I wouldn't want to make some mistakes that would not be obvious. Important details are revealed in the book that I have found nowhere else. The DVD that comes with the book is a powerful presentation that follows the book's format. The DVD shows some excellent examples of how to do exercises and how to actually ski the technique. It contains demonstrations of using the technique in many types of difficult terrain. This includes bumps which I am particularly interested in where carving is an especially difficult task. I was already aware of this system from several other sources. Without this book, I doubt that I would ever have been able to do it correctly. The book and the DVD work very well together.
Title : Snow Sense: A Guide to Evaluating Snow Avalanche Hazard Author : Jill A. Fredston Rating : 5 Stars out of 5. Summary : From Backcountry Magazine #19, 1999
Used by avalanche professionals as a base for avalanche education classes. Small size but HUGE on concise information for learning to recognize, evaluate, and avoid potential avalanche hazards.
Title : Everything the Instructors Never Told You About Mogul Skiing Author : Dan Dipiro Rating : 5 Stars out of 5. Summary : Rename to proper mogal skiing
I have been taught and have taught every thing in this book, but NOT AS WELL
Title : Anyone Can Be an Expert Skier 1: The New Way to Ski (Includes Bonus DVD) Author : Harald Harb Rating : 5 Stars out of 5. Summary : Awesome ski instruction system
I have experienced first hand instruction with this system. I have also taken the PSIA lessons offered at many ski areas. If you don't want to be stuck in the wedge forever then have a look at this. Harald Harb's PMTS is a systematic approach that will get you skiing better than 90% of the people you see skiing on any given day. Don't beleive the hype about out of the mainstream. They have something here. Believe it, this system works. If you want to carve and rip this is it!
Title : All-Mountain Skier : The Way to Expert Skiing Author : R. Mark Elling Rating : 5 Stars out of 5. Summary : Written for the intermediate skier
Elling wrote this for an intermediate to advanced skier looking to take their skiing to a higher level. Although it does have a good, large section on basic ski skills, it doesn't pretend to coddle a novice through pizza and french fries.
If the next day is a powder day, I'll review the sections on powder and crud. If it hasn't snowed in a while, I'll read the sections on carving and bumps. You can jump around and get exactly what you need out of it, and it's written very well for that purpose.
I highly recommend this book.
Title : Skiing for Dummies Author : Allen St. John Rating : 5 Stars out of 5. Summary : Whether you've already tried skiing, or want to
This is a terrific guide! For people who have already tried skiing and are still somewhat mystified by the complexity of the equipment and the rental shop and just finding one's way around, this book is an invaluable aid in moving up to the next level. For people considering taking up the sport in the next season, it will help you to have a satisfying, enjoyable experience.
The author provides handy, valuable tips on things as simple as what to wear, and things as complex as how to choose a ski. He explains how ski boots should fit, and how to rent them. There is a big emphasis on the importance of taking a lesson, but more importantly, how to get the most out of that lesson.
For anyone who plans a ski trip for next season, whether it is a day or a week or more, the small investment in this wonderful guide will be returned many times over. Even the most experienced skiers will find something useful.
Title : The Essential Guide to Skiing: 201 Things Every Skier Must Know Author : Ron LeMaster Rating : 5 Stars out of 5. Summary : Hey, this is a really cool book
I must say this is a really cool book. I mean, first of all, the title is exactly what this book is about "Things Every Skier Must Know". Finally, a book that lives up to its title! Daaamn! This book is quite unique in that it does not teach you ski technique or ski mechanics or ski maintenance...just way, way too many of these books. Instead, this book teaches you stuff...really useful, practical stuff like how to hook up your skis on your car rack...the right way! Or how to look for a well-qualified ski instructor - believe me, this is not an easy task to do! I've taken so many ski lessons and ended up with so many bad ski instructors, it's not even funny and I pretty much had to learn skiing on my own. There is also great advice on how to prepare for a ski vacation and some brief notes on skiing on various terrains and even a chapter on ski racing! This book ponders on almost every aspect of skiing but the kitchen sink (What does that have to do with skiing, you wonder...absolutely nothing). I highly recommend this book. It is a great read on the plane or long trips to the ski resort. I mean it is quite lengthy for a ski book, but then I can't recall a ski book that is about everything there is to know about skiing?
Title : Allen Mike's Really Cool Backcountry Ski Book (Falcon Guides Backcountry Skiing) Author : Allen O'Bannon Rating : 5 Stars out of 5. Summary : The best winter camping guide ever?
There are two types of winter campers: those who have this book and those who need it. Perhaps if you are very very experienced you don't need it but otherwise, get it! Allen wrote a short, but information full book, that is easy and fun to read quickly and jamn packed with a mix of basic functional knowledge, extra tidbits that are good to know, and all kinds of little tricks he has discovered over the years.
