I have been reading this book for about twenty years(first publication was November 1977); it was the first of two Inner Game books which, although differing in details, both transformed my attitude to and my performance in the sports I love. I was fortunate to have been given it by a patient who was an Inner Game instructor (or rather, facilitator). If Inner Skiing has only now (1997) become widely available, thanks to the Internet, a generation of British skiers has lost out; for years it has been available only in the USA and to members of Inner Game workshops. With examples from life and from Inner Skiing workshops which are encouraging, inspiring, and often emotionally touching, the book helps skiers of all standards to confront their fears and to tap into the mind's and the body's unconscious store of knowledge and skills; the fears of "flying", falling, speed, injury, failure, and the fear of looking stupid; the knowledge locked into Gallwey's Self 2, a Self which, he teaches us, is ours too. Where his Self 1 is trying, tense, unsure, scared and controlling, Self 2 is free, relaxed, effortless, powerful, and instinctive. Gallwey and his co-author Bob Kriegel, a more experienced skier than he and a psychologist, equip their readers with simple but highly effective keys to Self 2, enabling us increasingly to find in skiing the exhilaration of the breakthrough run, and unlocking the confidence without which the sport can be an exercise in anxiety. Most of us in the UK only get to ski once a year. I reread Inner Skiing annually as an essential pre-ski exercise, and if I don't read every word I never fail to take a dose of inspiration from the paragraph in the last chapter which begins "Inside us all is a mountain with no top and no bottom. The skiing there is perfect. The snow is made of pure peace and there is not a trace of Self 1 interference.................Skiing this inner mountain has the power to satisfy the human longing to know oneself and the reason for which one was born." A superbly presented compendium of two dozen classic ski and snowboard tours throughout the states of Vermont and New York, David Goodman's Backcountry Skiing Adventures offers the best routes, equipment and backcountry riding tips; topographic maps and photos for each tour; information on avalanche awareness, winter camping, gear, safety, and first aid. This absolutely user friendly outdoor guide is a "must" for anyone planning a skiing or snowboarding excursion in Vermont or New York. Also very highly recommended is the other title in this outstanding Appalachian Mountain Club "Backcountry Skiing Adventures" series: Classic Ski and Snowboard Tours in Maine and New Hampshire.

Summary : Great book that focuses on key skills

This is now one of the best books in my ski library, and I have nearly everything that is currently in print as well as a few things that are no longer in print.

Harald Harb's "Essentials of Skiing" approaches 6 fundamental skill areas which are applicable to all types of skiing: Tipping, Flexing/Extending, Counterbalancing(ie, angulation), counteracting, fore/aft balance and thoughts about the upper body.

A skier at any level can benefit from the insights, mental imagary and drills contained in this book for each of these skill areas. Additionally, there are dryland exercises and other conceptual exercises to help understand and feel what the body is supposed to be doing while skiing.

The pictures and diagrams are all first rate.

One thing I really like about this book is that unlike his previous two books which provided learning progressions towards expert skiing, this book instead provides a toolbox of information and drills to fine tune the skiing of any skier at any level. It focuses individually on the fundamental skills which all skiers use and will help them discover which skills they are deficient in and how to change that fact. The book not only covers what these skills are, but helps you understand the nuances to continually improve your execution of each skill.

Additionally, this book is not biased towards any particular ski method, including Harald Harb's own PMTS system presented in his earlier books(which I also reccomend heartily). Any skier, using any system, can benefit from every word in this book.

But what I really like about this book are all of the many insights and nuances presented about each of these fundamental skills. After you read the chapter on tipping, for example, you will blow the minds of your friends, fellow skiers or ski students with all of your knowledge and insight on how and why we tip our skis to turn. Reading the book I felt like Harald was giving away many of his secret coaching tricks for the price of a book.

The provided DVD is quite a bit shorter than the previous ones, but its also included for free with the book, so who is complaining? More online video content is promised. The video content is primarily a series of demonstrations showing some of the drills which are presented in the book, executed by Harald Harb himself.

In short, this is a great book on how to ski better. All teachers and coaches should own this book. I don't care who you are, if you read this book and practice the drills, your skiing will improve.

Summary : Excellent!

I've been telemarking badly for a few years, got hold of this book, and all my faults are in there! This is a wonderfully put together collection of tips, structured in a way that makes a beginners' progression through the various parts of a telemark turn simple.

The cartoon illustations convey the positioning with humour and accuracy, making clear the text, not that the text isn't clear, far from it.

The flowchart at the end is really worthwhile. Can't recommend this enough to a beginner or intermediate telemark turner!
