The author provides handy, valuable tips on things as simple as what to wear, and things as complex as how to choose a ski. He explains how ski boots should fit, and how to rent them. You really need Parker's book to understand the tips of this juvenile book. But once you've read Parker's book you immediately realise that this book is just collection of tips from Parker drafted in comics. Without explanations of course. I don't do anything unless I believe the tip is sound and this book does not convince me. Yeah, it's funny for a while but it does not supply the enthusiast the facts really needed to improve in free heels stuff.

This book is decent, but the Illustrated Guide to Snowboarding is a much more in-depth and well written book. It is also more entertaining with funny drawings and tips. This book really only skims the surface on all the areas you need to start snowboarding.

The PMTS Direct Parallel system is growing fast and our system works better than any other system. You can look for yourself on the forum listed below. Have a look at what real skiers are saying, skiers who have experienced the PMTS Direct Parallel first hand.

The poster who posted before me has no clue of what he is talking about, as we do not teach PMTS at Loveland and there are no qualified or accredited PMTS instructors at Loveland.

It maybe there are false instructors promoting themselves as a PMTS teachers. This is wrong and deceptive. Make sure before you book a PMTS instructor. PMTS instructors are listed and qualified, on the web site: www.pmts.org. A regular PSIA instructor can not teach PMTS, that's what this fellow experienced. The amazing thing is that... this CD cost me less than a day pass at the local ski site, and saved me years of floundering around on snow. Tao (the way) of skiing is a large web site on a CD-Rom, complete with ample advise (text, images and small movies). The movies were a lot of fun and the text was straight to the point. (The way you would want to be instructed). Personally, I thoroughly enjoyed the package and appreciated what it has done for me... and I'm not hung on an occasional Typo.

This is a great book if you are looking for a guide to some of the best cross country and telemark trails, however since i was looking for more of a downhill backcountry guide, this is not really what i was looking for, but it is still a very informative and well written book.

Summary : I like it! But...

I couldn't wait to get this book after having read Harald Harb's ACBES 1 2. I was hungry for a simpler version of those two books and I think Harb delivered.

At first read, the book is much more reader-friendly than the two ACBES books. It's great that Harb focused on movements of the whole body and not just the foot, as he grossly overanalyzed in the previous two books.

My only major problem with his books in general is that while his system is superior to any other instructional skiing methodology, Harb yet to learn the art of user-friendly explanations rather than getting too academic. But "Essentials" is the closest he's come and it feels good.

The accompanying DVD's production quality isn't as good as the previous discs. It's only about 15 min. and at the end he reveals it's basically a teaser for another set of DVDs he'll release soon. It got into topics like Counterbalancing and flexion so early on. How about basic stance? How about arm position? This is where I was disappointed in the lack of simplicity in this and many other DVDs. If you're going to title your series "Anyone Can Be an Expert Skier" or "Essentials of Skiing," you had better make sure that "Anyone" can understand how to even start the "Essentials!" (Do we have to leave simplicity to Marty Henckleman's old-school videos?)

One thing I wish all ski gurus would keep in mind is that the target market for skiing instruction is people who, yes, want to learn to ski... but first and foremost ski to have FUN. There's a huge opening for instruction that's easy and enjoyable too without being so academic. The closest I've seen to being both thorough and valuable is Harb's colleague Lito Tejada Flores-- who's taken Harb's PMTS and adapted a more Zen-like lesson for the novice skier.

I would recommend "Essentials," though, for anyone (like me) who thought Harb's ACBES books were a bit too academic for such simple, ingenious teaching technique as PMTS.

I am a 24 year old female who has been secretly yearning to try snowboarding. I haven't because I didn't know what stuff to rent or buy, or how not to look stupid. After reading this book, I can't wait to try it. Great explanations of what gear is best for women and why, and detailed explanations of what to do once you are on the snow. Very lighthearted and encouraging tone.

Physical weakness has plagued me for over three years. This book is giving me the confidence to trust my body all over again. Due to agoraphobia I have become weak. After starting this book I am now giving my body the credit it deserves. He suggests dealing with doubt,worry,and fear.
